DOCTER LI FENG
Born 1939 in Hong Kong, Li Feng graduated from National Taiwan University Medical School Department of Medical Science. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1968 when she studied in Toronto University Medical School in Canada. When she came back, she worked as an associate professor in National Taiwan University Medical School and a chief physician in cytopathic study.
In 1998, she retired from her position with the lymphoma on her body. Li Feng is now the person in charge of a pathology center. She makes great effort to promote the Department of Health free cervical smear test for women. Prevention is better than treatment. It makes a step closer to the success of preventing cervical cancer for women in Taiwan. She collected the publications of “Who Said Cancer Is Fatal”, “How to Fight Cancer”, “Relax and Let Your Body Talk”, “Your Health Is on You”, “I Have Spared Thirty Years” to share with cancer patients. She became a volunteer in Tsu Chi Medical Association to help more people get out of desperation.
Thirty seven years ago, Li Feng was diagnosed with lymphoma and half a year to live. The main-stream treatments of Western medicine including surgery, chemotherapy, and electrotherapy all failed. She once lost the strength to fight cancer; however, in a desperate self-reflection, she tried to live in peace with cancer. Miraculously, she has spared thirty seven years.
Li Feng’s profession is cytopathology. When she understands more thoroughly, she realizes that “Illness is by one’s own making”. If you put your cell to death without giving it a chance to live, the body will not recover. “Being sick is just the way the damaged cell is calling for help.” When she faces every cancer patients, she knows how to teach them kindly treat their cells.
More than thirty years ago, Li Feng had side effects from surgery, chemotherapy and electrotherapy. She was in and out of the hospital many times. During the point of life and death, she immediately stopped medication and every active therapy to give her cells a chance to breath. She worked very hard to learn yoga, adjust daily schedule, diet change; and she tried Chinese medicine and other alternative treatment because she had seen the limitation of Western medication. She always believes: If you carefully manage your health, every disease (including cancer) can be treated.
The Director of National Taiwan University Department of Information Management, Dr. Hsieh Ching-Chia, is one of Li Feng’s guinea pigs. He was under Li Feng’s instruction to live in peach with cancer and understand the mysterious aspect of cancer cell. He changed his old habits and followed Li Feng’s interesting prescription: leave Taipei, walk for four hours a day, meditate for three hours every day, laugh loudly every day, do positive thinking, and eat organic food. Finally, he proves there is a route to live in peace with cancer.
For more than forty years, Li Feng has worked with cells under microscope. She sees the birth, aging, sickness and death of cells. Gradually, she gains an insight into the pain of cells. She tries to feel from the standpoint of cells and realizes cells’ feeling when a disaster happens in the world of cells. She constantly calls on people’s attention: Listen to the cry of cells. In early stage, Li Feng confronted cancer with an attitude of “fighting”, hoping to resist the invasion from cancer and reduce the pain from the illness. After thirty-seven years experience, she thoroughly gave up the choice of words “fight cancer”, “cure cancer”. She indicates: We would rather to coexist with cancer instead of vigorously fighting it and dealing with it. So, Li Feng became healthier when she had passed the first “thirty-seven years” of living peacefully with cancer. She wants the second “thirty-seven years” to help more cancer patients.
“Actually, cells are miserable when they are sick. Cells do not want to get sick; even if they get sick, they want to return to normal healthy status. Because of too much pressure, cells have damage or pathological change; they cry for help to warn their master by showing the sign of illness. Do it before it is too late, they say. This is Li Feng’s new idea of health.
Everyone must change health concept, admit the responsibility, feel sorry for wrong behavior, and gently care for the cells. If necessary, together with appropriate medical treatment, it is still possible to fully recover from the illness. Li Feng is proud of promoting the idea of living with cancer in peace and the Department of Health comprehensive free cervical smear test for women. She still works under microscope every day in pathology research lab for the prevention of cervical cancer. Ten years of her effort has successfully reduced the death rate of cervical cancer patients in Taiwan.
